Toronto Region: One of the best educated workforces in the G7

People drive innovation. Creative, diverse, smart workers are the most valuable asset in research-based industry, and they are here in the Toronto Region.  Ontario's workforce ranks among the most educated and diverse worldwide:

  • 64 per cent of Canada's adult population has a post-secondary education, the most of any industrialized nation and significantly more than the US (39 per cent). Ontario's stock of science and engineering grads - a crucial foundation for innovative companies - is also higher than the US.
  • With nine universities and eight colleges/institutes of technology the Toronto Region has the highest concentration of post-secondary institutions in the country. These state-of-the-art research and educational institutions produce the thinkers and leaders for R&D-based industries.
  • About 40 per cent of the 7.4 million people in the region were born outside Canada. Over 100 languages and dialects are spoken here, and over one third of residents speak a language other than English at home.
  • More than 100,000 immigrants choose the Toronto Region every year, and almost three-quarters of these newcomers over age 15 have a post-secondary degree or certificate.

Toronto Region's multicultural, multilingual, highly-educated society is an invaluable resource for conducting business in today's globalized economy.

"Canadian immigration policy is a major factor for us, because Canada attracts some of the best people in the world."

-- Dr. Hadi Mahabadi, Xerox Research Centre of Canada
