Unparalleled research expertise and advanced research facilities

The Toronto Region's unparalleled research infrastructure places it among the world's top research and development (R&D) hubs.  The Toronto Region has Canada's highest concentration of post-secondary institutions, many of which are top-ranked in their respective fields.

The strong publicly-funded research sector in the region is made up of 9 universities and 8 colleges/institutes of technology.  The universities' and hospitals' research facilities, colleges' applied research expertise, and collaborative research centres are respected the world over. These institutions generate fundamental discoveries that can be transformed into marketable products and services, and provide valuable research experience for students at all levels. In addition, they produce a highly-skilled workforce for a wide range of technology-based industries and R&D services:

  • Ontario university R&D performance exceeds its Canadian peers for the last two decades.
  • $6.2 billion in new funding for post-secondary institutions over the next five years from the provincial government will ensure that Ontario continues to be an innovation leader.
