Specialization Sunnybrook is an academic health sciences centre that is affiliated with the University of Toronto. It has seven strategic programs: brain sciences; cancer (Odette Cancer Centre); cardiac (Schulich Heart Centre); musculoskeletal (Holland Musculoskeletal Program); trauma, emergency and critical care; veterans and community; and women and babies.

Research Area/FocusSRI has four disciplines: clinical epidemiology, clinical integrative biology, combined health services sciences, imaging, and molecular and cellular biology. It has seven strategic research programs, which derive from and correspond with the hospital's strategic programs.

Awards/Recognition/Discoveries
  • Pioneered the development of digital mammography.
  • Created the world's first system to generate T cells in the laboratory.
  • Developed the first method to image blood flow in the microscopic vessels in heart muscle in real time.
  • Invented and licensed the world's first high-frequency ultrasound microimaging scanner for preclinical imaging, now used worldwide for research and clinical applications.

Current examples of Initiatives
  • Partnering with the Hospital for Sick Children in the University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety, to foster novel research and education projects aimed at improving patient safety locally and internationally. The centre will provide a focus for collaboration across Toronto Academic Health Science Network affiliates.
  • Building four new floors at the main campus: two to house the women and babies program, and two for state-of-the-art research facilities, including the $160-million Centre for Research in Image-Guided Therapeutics.
  • Partnering with Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Lakehead University and Philips Medical Systems in the Molecular Medicine Research Centre, to enhance our understanding of health and disease at the cellular and molecular levels.
