Specialization St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is a three site teaching hospital, and a division of the St. Joseph's Health System. Clinical specialties include cancer surgery, regional kidney and urinary services, kidney transplant, kidney dialysis, regional chest and lung disease, thoracic surgery, regional mental health services (acute, emergency, specialized, and community), bariatric surgery, robotic surgery and telemedicine, musculoskeletal disease, maternal and newborn, general internal medicine and laboratory medicine. Affiliated with McMaster University, Mohawk College, and more than 40 other academic institutions.

Awards/Recognition/Discoveries
  • Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health developed the inhalation device called the Aerochamber to improve the distribution of aerosol particles in the lung.  This is used worldwide for lung disease.
  • Worked with NASA and the CSA, using undersea facilities, to examine the use of telemedicine and teleradiology techniques in space missions.
  • Developed six tests for SARS RNA in two weeks during the SARS crisis, to help track the disease.
  • Designated an Ontario Centre of Excellence for Health Technology Assessment, by the Ontario Government (awarded to PATH research team).
  • Imaged a breast cancer tumour less than one millimeter in diameter using an MRI.
  • Developed the sputum test, a standardized method of measuring bronchial responsiveness in asthma and rhinitis (hay fever) patients.
  • Led the international clinical trial that demonstrated the role of vitamin K in blood clotting.
  • Founding leader of the Canadian Critical Care Clinical Trials Group.
  • Double gold medal winning Mood Disorders Program (American Psychiatric Association).

  • Leader of the CHILD study, a massive pan-Canada birth cohort study to investigate respiratory disease.
  • BRAIN Centre project to integrate psychiatry and medicine in treatment, education and research.
  • Inventor of a single test for the 20 most common respiratory infections (FDA approved).
  • Leader of the Ontario Health Technology Assessment Program closely linked to policy discussions and decisions in the province.
